Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ has interesting speech that would go well for today’s Gun Control debate

The following are words that screenwriter Tony Kushner gave to President Lincoln near the end of Steven Spielberg‘s film biography. Those words were addressed at healing our nation after the 13th Amendment brought an end to both slavery and the civil war, but they apply equally well to gun violence, financial greed, and virtually every other self-serving evil that afflicts our nation today.

The words seem especially apropos today:

English: Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States. Latviešu: Abrahams Linkolns, sešpadsmitais ASV prezidents. Српски / Srpski: Абрахам Линколн, шеснаести председник Сједињених Америчких Држава. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

“If we submit ourselves to law, even submit to losing freedoms; the freedom to oppress, for instance, we may discover other freedoms previously unknown to us.

Suppose that all we’ve done is show the world that democracy isn’t chaos; that there is a great invisible strength in a people’s union. Say we show that a people can endure awful sacrifice and yet cohere, mighten that save at least the idea of democracy to aspire to? Eventually to become worthy of? At all rates, whatever may be proven by blood and sacrifice must have been proved by now.

Shall we stop this bleeding?”

Shall we?

  2. –You’re spending too much time on the ‘assigned’ topics.

The ONLY thing to be puzzling over in this —8th? –9th?
Hollywood Lincoln, even beyond Spielberg’s apparent
preference for a foreigner in the role of this quintessential
American icon —-is —-WHY—- he, and for that matter
the heavily promoted Godwin herself. have BALKED
what’s surely the ONLY urgently relevant aspect of
    Lincoln’s legacy in 2012?

Of course we’re speaking of his quite possibly
diss of the world banking monopoly over finance
    of the war.

story —WILL BLOW YOUR MIND——for REAL. . .

  3. I am an American living in Japan, and while Americans balk at their “draconian” strict gun control laws…I must say, living in a place that is SO safe feels a hell of a lot like FREEDOM! When parents are living in fear of sending their kids to school everyday, is that freedom?
